Welcome to Beauty Bookend, located at https://beautybookend.github.io/BB/ (the "Site").

Beauty Bookend respects the privacy of its visitors. This Privacy Policy explains what information may be collected or processed when you visit or interact with the Site, why it may be used, the third-party services involved, and the privacy choices that may be available to you.

Beauty Bookend is primarily a static website hosted using GitHub Pages. We do not operate user accounts or maintain our own customer database. However, technical information may be processed by third-party services used to host, secure, analyze, and operate the Site.

1. Information You May Provide Voluntarily

Email Communications

If you contact Beauty Bookend by email, we receive your email address, the contents of your message, and any other information you choose to provide.

Please avoid sending unnecessary sensitive personal, medical, financial, or other confidential information by email.

Comments or Other User-Submitted Content

If commenting or another user-submission feature is available on the Site, information you submit may be processed by the service providing that feature.

Depending on the service used, this may include your display name, email address, website address, comment text, IP address, browser information, or information used for spam prevention and moderation.

Information intentionally included in a public comment may be visible to anyone who visits the Site. Do not include sensitive personal information in public comments.

2. Information Processed Automatically

When you access Beauty Bookend, technical information may be processed automatically by the Site's hosting, consent-management, analytics, security, or infrastructure providers.

Depending on the service, your location, and your privacy choices, this may include:

• IP address
• Approximate country, region, or city
• Browser and device information
• Operating system
• Referring website or page
• Pages requested or viewed
• Date and time of visits
• General Site interaction and performance information
• Your consent status

3. GitHub Pages Hosting

Beauty Bookend is hosted using GitHub Pages, a service provided by GitHub.

GitHub may process technical information associated with requests to the Site, including IP addresses and other network information, for purposes such as delivering, maintaining, securing, and protecting its services.

GitHub operates according to its own privacy policies and data-processing practices.

4. Country Detection

Beauty Bookend uses a Cloudflare-hosted country-detection service to determine the approximate country from which a visitor is connecting.

This information is used to determine which cookie and Analytics consent experience should be presented.

The country-detection request may involve the processing of technical information such as your IP address by Cloudflare as part of providing the network service.

Beauty Bookend uses the resulting country code for consent-management purposes. The Site does not use this system to determine your precise physical location.

If country detection fails or returns an unknown country, Beauty Bookend treats the visitor as being in a consent-required region.

5. Regional Consent Approach

Beauty Bookend currently requires an explicit Analytics choice for visitors detected in:

• Canada
• European Union member states
• Other European Economic Area countries
• The United Kingdom
• Switzerland
• Locations that cannot be reliably identified

Visitors in these locations are presented with the Silktide consent interface before Analytics storage is enabled.

For visitors detected in other countries, Beauty Bookend may enable Analytics automatically under the Site's current regional configuration.

Privacy laws vary by country and may change over time. Beauty Bookend may revise its regional consent configuration when appropriate.

6. Silktide Consent Manager

Beauty Bookend uses the Silktide Consent Manager to manage Analytics preferences in consent-required regions.

Where the consent interface is shown, visitors may:

• Accept Analytics
• Reject non-essential technologies
• Review or modify their preferences

Silktide stores consent choices in the browser's local storage so that the Site can remember the visitor's previous choice.

Consent preferences are stored for the Site and browser profile. They are not stored separately for each country. Changing your VPN location does not by itself erase a previously saved Beauty Bookend consent choice.

If you delete browser local storage or other Site data, Beauty Bookend may ask you to make a new privacy choice.

7. Google Analytics and Consent Mode

Beauty Bookend uses Google Analytics 4 to understand general Site usage and improve content, navigation, and performance.

The Site uses Google Consent Mode.

When a page initially loads, Analytics storage is configured as denied before the Site determines whether Analytics consent is required for that visitor.

For visitors in consent-required regions, Analytics storage remains denied unless the visitor chooses to allow Analytics.

If Analytics is accepted, Beauty Bookend updates the consent state to allow Analytics storage and sends the applicable page-view information to Google Analytics.

If Analytics remains denied, Google Analytics does not read or write first-party Analytics cookies. Under Google's Advanced Consent Mode, Google may nevertheless receive limited cookieless signals for measurement and modelling. These signals may include information such as consent status, timestamp, user agent, referrer, screen information, and IP address as part of normal network communication. Google states that Analytics does not log or store the IP address for this purpose.

For visitors in countries where Beauty Bookend's current configuration does not require prior Analytics consent, the Site may update Analytics storage to granted automatically.

Beauty Bookend does not use Google Analytics for the purpose of personally identifying individual visitors.

8. Advertising and Personalization

Beauty Bookend does not currently use its consent system to enable personalized advertising.

The current Google consent configuration keeps the following advertising permissions denied:

• Advertising storage
• Advertising user data
• Advertising personalization

If Beauty Bookend introduces advertising or remarketing technologies in the future, this Privacy Policy and the consent configuration may be updated.

9. How Information May Be Used

Information may be used for purposes including:

• Operating and maintaining Beauty Bookend
• Responding to emails and inquiries
• Displaying and moderating comments, where applicable
• Determining the appropriate consent experience
• Understanding general Site usage
• Improving articles, navigation, performance, and usability
• Remembering privacy preferences
• Preventing fraud, abuse, spam, or security incidents
• Complying with legal obligations
• Protecting the rights and security of Beauty Bookend and its visitors

10. Third-Party Service Providers

Beauty Bookend does not sell personal information.

Information may be processed by third-party services that help operate the Site, including:

• GitHub — website hosting
• Cloudflare — country-detection and network services
• Google — Google Analytics
• Microsoft — email communications through Outlook
• Comment or spam-prevention providers, if such features are enabled

These providers operate according to their own privacy policies, terms, and legal obligations.

Information may also be disclosed where reasonably necessary to comply with law, a court order, a lawful government request, or to protect rights, security, visitors, or others.

11. International Processing

Some third-party providers used by Beauty Bookend operate internationally. Information may therefore be processed or stored outside the country where you live.

Privacy and data-protection laws in those countries may differ from the laws in your jurisdiction.

12. Data Retention

Beauty Bookend aims to retain information under its control only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, subject to legitimate operational, security, legal, or record-keeping requirements.

• Email: Correspondence may be retained for as long as reasonably necessary to respond to inquiries and maintain appropriate records.
• Comments: Public comments may remain available while the related content remains published unless they are removed or deletion is requested and removal is reasonably possible.
• Consent preferences: Silktide preferences may remain in browser local storage until changed, deleted, or cleared.
• Google Analytics: Analytics information is retained according to the settings configured for the Analytics property and Google's applicable policies.
• Infrastructure information: GitHub, Cloudflare, Google, and other service providers may retain information according to their own policies.

13. Your Privacy Choices and Rights

Depending on where you live and which laws apply, you may have rights relating to your personal information.

These may include rights to:

• Request access to information held about you
• Request correction of inaccurate information
• Request deletion where applicable
• Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent
• Object to or restrict certain processing where applicable
• Request portability where applicable
• Complain to an appropriate privacy or data-protection authority

These rights vary by jurisdiction and may be subject to legal exceptions.

Beauty Bookend can generally act only on information under its control. Information held independently by third-party providers may need to be addressed directly with the applicable provider.

14. Canadian Visitors

Where Canadian privacy law applies, Beauty Bookend aims to provide meaningful information about its privacy practices and obtain consent where appropriate.

Canadian visitors are currently placed in the consent-required group for Google Analytics.

You may contact Beauty Bookend regarding access to or correction of personal information under its control, subject to applicable legal requirements and exceptions.

15. EEA, United Kingdom and Switzerland

Visitors detected in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or Switzerland are currently required to make an explicit Analytics choice through the Silktide consent interface.

Analytics storage remains denied unless Analytics is accepted.

Depending on applicable law, additional rights may include access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection, portability, withdrawal of consent, and the right to complain to a data-protection authority.

16. United States Visitors

Beauty Bookend's current regional configuration does not automatically present the Silktide Analytics-consent banner solely because a visitor is detected in the United States.

Certain U.S. states provide privacy rights when their laws apply to a particular organization or processing activity.

Beauty Bookend does not sell personal information and does not currently enable personalized advertising through its consent configuration.

17. Children's Privacy

Beauty Bookend is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children.

The Site does not provide user account registration and does not knowingly request personal information from children through user accounts.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child has provided personal information directly to Beauty Bookend, contact us so that the situation can be reviewed.

18. Data Security

Beauty Bookend uses third-party platforms and services to operate the Site and takes reasonable steps within its control to reduce privacy and security risks.

However, no website, Internet transmission, browser-storage mechanism, email service, or electronic storage system can be guaranteed to be completely secure.

19. External Websites

Beauty Bookend may link to websites that it does not operate or control. Those websites have their own privacy practices, cookies, and terms.

This Privacy Policy applies to Beauty Bookend and not to independent third-party websites.

20. Changes to This Privacy Policy

Beauty Bookend may update this Privacy Policy when the Site, technologies, service providers, privacy practices, or applicable requirements change.

The "Last updated" date at the top of this page identifies the latest revision.
